May marks both Children’s Mental Health Week (May 5–11) and Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the importance of mental health in the lives of children, youth, and families. At the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy, we recognize that understanding children's mental health is essential to providing holistic, trauma-informed care.

To help support continued learning in this area, we are highlighting free and accessible training opportunities available to child welfare professionals.
Children's Mental Health Certification (DHS)
The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DCYF) offers a free, self-paced Children’s Mental Health Certification.
This certification covers:
- The foundations of children's mental health
- Recognizing signs and symptoms
- Trauma-informed care strategies
- Culturally responsive approaches
- This certification is open to all professionals working with children and families.

Family Home Visiting and Mental Health Training (MDH)
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) provides training for those working with families and young children, with a focus on early mental health, developmental support, and building resilience.
