Big changes are coming to Foundations training for new child protection workers! Following is an overview of what agency supervisors and their workers will need to know.

Current Foundations Training Ending Soon

For child protection workers who are currently enrolled or have completed some parts of Child Welfare Foundations Training (CWTA X100), there are two final cohorts remaining:

  • Cohort 126 | August 6 - October 10 | Duluth
  • Cohort 127 | September 17 - November 14 | Virtual

If workers have completed some of Foundations training but not all, they should contact Myrna Klegin at mklegin@umn.edu ASAP. Myrna will help them reschedule. A checklist for supervisors can be found here (for Cohort 127 and earlier).

PLEASE NOTE: Cohorts 126 and 127 are the final cohorts of the current Foundations curriculum. Learners who are not able to complete ALL parts of this training will be required to start the new Foundations from the beginning. Do not register unless you can complete all dates.

New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113) is now open for agency supervisors and tribal leaders to assign to new child protection workers. The following cohorts are available:

  • Cohort 200 | September 10 - December 20 | Roseville
  • Cohort 201 | September 17 - January 10 | Owatonna
  • Cohort 202 | October 8 - January 23 | Roseville
  • Cohort 203 | November 13 - March 5 | Roseville
  • Cohort 204 | November 20 - March 7 | Detroit Lakes
  • Cohort 205 | December 3 - March 20 | Roseville

Supervisors will assign the new Foundations to new workers through the Training Portal. Once workers enroll in Foundations, they will select the location and dates that work best for them.

The full instructor-led schedule for the cohorts listed above can be found here.

What You Need to Know

  1. After Cohort 127, workers who miss ANY part of the current Foundations training will need to start from the very beginning with the new Foundations training (the numbering of the new cohorts will start with 200).
  2. In the Training Portal, supervisors will assign the following four courses to all new child protection workers (a checklist for supervisors with additional details can be found here):
    • New Worker Orientation: Self-Paced Modules (CWTA X110)
    • New Worker Orientation: Instructor-Led Enhancement (CWTA X111)
    • ICWA/MIFPA Foundations for New Workers (CWTA X219)
    • New Worker Foundations (CWTA X113)
  1. Once enrolled into the New Worker Foundations course, new workers will select a cohort via a Google form accessed on the Canvas course home page. Learners must commit to attending all dates in that cohort.
  2. New Worker Foundations Training MUST be completed within the first six months of employment, so workers should be sure to select the dates that make the most sense for their schedules.

Foundations Supervisor Update Sessions

Three virtual meetings are being offered for supervisors, tribal leaders, and agency representatives to discuss this new training and to answer questions. Each will be an hour or less. One session will be recorded and posted on this page later in August. Register below:
