Kate Mejicano

What is your job title, and what will you be doing?

I am the new Communications Graduate Assistant. I will be working with our communications team to connect with child welfare professionals throughout Minnesota, provide information regarding upcoming trainings, and promote relevant activities and events.

Tell us about your education and/or work experience prior to joining the MNCWTA.

I have over ten years of direct service experience working for vulnerable youth and families, including those in the child welfare system, and over five years doing administrative and human resources work in local nonprofit organizations. I am currently working on my Master of Public Health degree, with a focus on Community Health Promotion and minors in Health Equity and Mass Communications. I also am an officer on the University of Minnesota's Interprofessional Student Parent Community advisory board and was recently appointed to the Ramsey County Community Health Services Advisory Committee.

What are you most passionate about professionally?

I am passionate about health education, social justice, and empowering community. I got into public health because I want my work to ensure individuals, families, and communities have the information and resources they need to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. I am also passionate about equity, intersectionality, and anti-racism.

What are you most passionate about personally?

As a lifelong learner, I am dedicated to continuing my own education and am always seeking opportunities for development. Right now, I am focusing on how storytelling can break down complex ideas and make them accessible for a wide range of audiences.

What are you surprisingly good at?

I am surprisingly resourceful! I enjoy seeking out new experiences, researching local events, and connecting with new-to-me community organizations. This curiosity has allowed me to build relationships and find several opportunities over the years.

What do you like to do outside of work?

When I am not working or studying, I am usually chasing after my kids, exploring a local farmer’s market or community festival, or hanging out by the water. I also love playing board games, listening to podcasts, and am often working on some sort of art project.
