Cultural Responsiveness Training Coming in June

With the passing of the Minnesota African American Family Preservation and Child Welfare Disproportionality Act (MAAFPCWDA) in 2024, there were a number of requirements included regarding the training of child protection workers and supervisors. The Training Academy first created training for Hennepin and Ramsey counties to accommodate their earlier implementation deadline. The Active Efforts Training: Family Preservation and the MAAFPCWDA Framework (CWTA X221) launched in late 2024, and numerous trainings were hosted to accommodate the large number of child protection workers in those counties. Later in 2025, as the majority of Hennepin and Ramsey workers had completed the training, we were able to offer the Active Efforts course to all interested counties.

During the same time, the Training Academy began working with Public Knowledge to develop the next phase of training required in the MAAFPCWDA legislation, Cultural Responsiveness Training. Over the past few months, we have noted a high demand for the Active Efforts course, and realized that there was confusion about the MAAFPCWDA training requirements. While the Active Efforts course was an expectation of Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, it is the MAAFPCWDA Cultural Responsiveness Training that is the required training for all Minnesota county and tribal child protection workers and supervisors.

As of June 2026, the Active Efforts Training course will be retired. For those who have not taken Active Efforts, the good news is that key concepts and learning from the current Active Efforts course are being incorporated into the new training. We are confident this new Cultural Responsiveness Training will provide a stronger, more integrated foundation for this important work.

Registration for the MAAFPCWDA Cultural Responsiveness Training will be available on our website later this spring. We will also announce this in our monthly newsletter and training mailings.
